The Business Development Officer is responsible for identifying, developing, and securing new business opportunities within the shipping and logistics sector. The role focuses on building strong client relationships, promoting ocean freight services, and driving revenue growth.
Bachelor degree
Education, Experience & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Logistics, or a related field.
Minimum 3–5 years of sales/business development experience in ocean freight.
Existing network of ocean freight customers preferred.
Willingness to travel for client visits and industry events.
Computer and Operational Skills
Proficient in MS Office, Email, Internet, ERP, and CRM tools.
Soft Skills
In-depth knowledge of ocean freight services, trade routes, and carrier networks.
Strong negotiation and closing skills.
Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
Ability to build rapport and trust with clients.
1. Sales & Business Development
Identify and approach shippers, importers, and exporters with ocean freight needs.
Promote FCL, LCL, breakbulk, and project cargo services.
Negotiate freight rates, surcharges, and contract terms to maximize profitability.
2. Client Relationship Management
Develop and maintain long-term client relationships to ensure repeat business.
Offer consultative support on trade lanes, transit times, and routing options.
Address client queries regarding schedules, documentation, and shipment tracking.
3. Market Research & Pricing
Monitor sea freight market trends, rate changes, and competitor activities.
Identify new trade lanes and business opportunities.
Collaborate with pricing teams to obtain competitive carrier rates.
4. Coordination & Service Delivery
Coordinate with shipping lines, NVOCCs, and overseas agents for space and service.
Work with operations and documentation teams to ensure smooth cargo handling.
Facilitate smooth transfer of bookings from sales to execution teams.
5. Reporting & Compliance
Maintain a current database of leads, prospects, and client interactions.
Prepare and submit sales performance reports.
Ensure compliance with shipping regulations and internal policies.
